Virtual Advent Tour – 2011

Welcome to the Book Drunkard leg of the 2011 Virtual Advent Tour.  Today, I’m going to share with you what MY perfect holiday reading day is like.

Of course, I need to start out with a book.  Now, I must admit that I’m not huge into Christmas books.  However, a couple years ago, I received a book and I absolutely fell in love with it!  THE UNFINISHED GIFT by Dan Walsh is a beautifully told story about a young boy who is living with his Grandfather during WW2. I highly recommend the book AND its sequel, THE HOMECOMING.    The book is perfect for all ages so I even suggest reading it aloud to your family during the holidays.  I’m currently reading his new book, Remembering Christmas and it’s putting me in the holiday mood 🙂

Now, I don’t know about you, but I like it to smell extra nice in my house during Christmas.  Sometimes, it gets too cold out to open the windows and air out the house so potpourri is a nice choice.  I especially like this stove top one I found on the Make it Do blog.  I don’t always use the cranberries – the cloves and cinnamon sticks totally do it for me.  Nothing else smells more like Christmas for me.

If the book isn’t enough to warm your soul, how about a nice hot drink?  My favourite Christmastime drink is apple cider.  If you want to kick it up a notch, try heating the cider in a pan (don’t boil)  with cloves, cinnamon sticks and an orange – so buy extra when you get the ingredients for the potpourri!  It will warm you right down to your toes.

If you are like me and don’t mind music playing in the background while you read, this is one of the songs that will be on the playlist.  The Little Drummer boy, originally entitled Carol of the Drums, was written in 1941.  For me, the story is the true meaning of Christmas – a poor, little boy with nothing, giving what he can, not for show, but out of love.

  1. Sounds like a really great day to me! I am definitely going to keep an eye out for that book that you mentioned. Love reading about WWII. Normally I would have said that I wasn’t much of a Christmas story reader but this year I have read quite a few – mainly romances.

Thanks for participating in the tour this year!

  2. Thanks for the book recommendations. I’ll keep my eyes open for them at the library.

  3. I like reading books about WWII, so I will have to check these two out. Cloves and cinnamon is definitely the smell of Christmas.

  4. I have never heard of that book before. It sounds like my idea of a read, though. I will have to check it out!

  5. Thanks for highlighting the book – I always like to read something special at Christmas.

  6. Thanks for the book recommendations! I hadn’t heard of the author or those books, but it sounds like an interesting read! I haven’t made potpourri in a bit; thanks for the reminder to make some this holiday season for the house to smell “festive”!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season!

    betty

  7. I’ve seen that potpourri on Pinterest and it looks so nice. I would try to drink it! lol I’ll try the cider instead.

  8. That sounds like such a nice reading day! I hope you get a lot of time to do that over the holidays!

  9. While I came here from the virtual advent tour, I am also excited to have found you – looks like a great blog for picking future books to read! Thanks for the suggestion of the two books, I do tend to like Christmas books this time of year 🙂

  10. Hmmm, homemade potpourri! What a lovely idea. I might have to try that. Thanks!

  11. Love a house that feels and smells like Christmas. I have made a similar stove-top pot pourri using apple peels, but I like the citrus idea. Hope you have a warm and cozy Christmas.

  12. I think I have that book, but haven’t read it yet. It sounds wonderful. I love the smells of Christmas. I have tons of candles and instead of burning a bunch at once, I alternate the different smells from day to day. I also only burn one and then I use two candle warmers for the other two. I think the candle warmers make the candles smell so much better.

My stop is posted at my Christmas blog today. http://christmasspirit-truebookaddict.blogspot.com/ Hope you can stop by!
