Ciao Bella is the second book written by authors Gina Buonaguro and Janice Kirk. Set in 1945, at the end of the second World War, it tells the story of a Canadian girl, Grace (turned Graziella) , who awaits the return of her husband after the war to his father’s mountain farm in Italy. Instead, an American named Frank ‘accidently’ finds his way into her home and life and heart. When news arrives that Ugo is dead and won’t be returning home to his young wife and his huge family, Grace makes plans to leave Italy with Frank. Things never go as planned.
I didn’t think anything could top The Sidewalk Artist, the first book written by Gina and Janice, but Ciao Bella is right up there on par with it. The story is so beautifully told, you’ll almost believe you are Grace choosing between a husband you thought was gone forever and a new and exciting love. It’s a romantic book, but ohhh so much more than that. The plot is rich with tales of family, obligation, sorrow and the harshness of wartime.
This book left me with such a wonderful feeling. I was sad and yet happy with the outcome of the story. I highly recommend it.
