Book Review – Island of the Swans by Ciji Ware

Island of the Swans is the story of Jane Maxwell, the Fourth Duchess of Gordon, from Scotland.  I adore historical fiction so given the chance to read something from an author I hadn’t read before, I jumped at the chance.  The book is excellent.  Ciji Ware is a wonderful storyteller and an obvious amount of research and work went into the telling of Jane’s tale.  Apart from all the history included, I love how the author incorporates real people into the story (Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, for one).

Full of tragic romance, the book definitely sent me on an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish.  Don’t forget to bring your tissues when you settle in to read this one – you are going to need them!  The book is long, but not drawn-out.  And I never found myself wishing it would end.  In fact, I want a sequel…or a movie!  Anything that will give me more.  The only good thing about being done reading this book is that I will finally get to sleep!

Many thanks to Danielle at Sourcebooks for sending me this fabulous book.

  1. I agree…a movie of this book would be great! At least sourcebooks is republishing all 5 of her historical fiction novels!

I had a chance to interview Ciji Ware on my blog. She had some great things to say about Island of the Swans and a bit of history behind the book! Here is the link: “Interview with Ciji Ware”

  2. I’m reading this one now and really enjoying it. It is long, so it’s taking me longer to read, but so far, I haven’t wished it would hurry along. Glad to see you liked it.
