Book Drunkard

“I am simply a 'book drunkard.' Books have the same irresistible temptation for me that liquor has for its devotee. I cannot withstand them.” L.M. Montgomery

I finished Men With Red Ties: Diary of an Emigre late last year.  It’s a shortbook, only 183 pages, but that’s not the reason why I started it one day and finished it the next.

Once I got passed the confusing first 50-odd pages, I was hooked.  Let me first explain ‘confusing’.  I was never sure which character was speaking.  It sort of moved from first person to third person with no warning sometimes.  Because there wasn’t much introduction, I kept mixing the characters up.  There were, I think, three girls whose  names began with ‘A’.  The main character is Alina who came to America expecting a wonderful life but wound up becoming a stripper.

The story got really interesting to me when Alina and her friend, Jackie, hit Vegas.  The girls, mainly Jackie, have a plan for making a lot of money.  I was surprised how intricate these plans are!

All in all, an entertaining and different book.  And while the subject is heavy and quite moving at times, the book is light and easy.
